School board member Joseph Brumskill portrayed a reporter from the Wilmington Journal-Every Evening who might have interviewed a student on the day P.S. opened.

Retired teacher and recognized P.S. historian Harry Fox told of a highlight in the school's history. In 1965, it was chosen as the nation's most outstanding school in conjunction with an annual commemoration of Francis Bellamy's having composed the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. The flag behind Fox flew over the U.S. Capitol during the commemoration and was presented to the school. It became the custom to fly it from the P.S. flag staff each Delaware Day, Dec. 7.
