Districtwide,
the percentages of students
meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and mathematics
increased at all grade levels. When it came to writing, however,
the percentage went up only at the elementary level. In all
categories at all levels, the proportions meeting or exceeding the
standards in Brandywine were higher than for the state as a
whole.
Brandywine and Concord High again ranked among the top 10 high
schools in the state in all three subjects tested. The
district's 'academically gifted' class topped their
intermediate- and elementary-level peers in all schools in all three subjects. Hanby had the second highest average score in math among the
state's middle schools and Springer was fourth.
Although 'gifted' students were
grouped separately from the rest of the student body in rults
reported by the state
|
Department of Education,
Claymont Intermediate showed a year-to-year gain in its
average reading score. A DelDOE spokesman said the
separate reporting was at the request of the Brandywine
district, the only one in the state that has a
self-contained program for those students.
Brandywine
posted the highest average writing scores among the 15
districts with elementary and intermediate schools. It had
the third highest reading scores at those levels and the third
highest math score at the intermediate level.

with middle schools, Brandywine ranked
second in math and it was third among the 19 districts with high
schools.
The tests were
administered to children in the third, fifth, eighth and 10th
grades.
DelDOE and the
education establishment in general strictly avoids using test scores
to compare performances of districts or schools although the testing
program was established five years ago concurrently with the
movement to encourage greater competition among public schools
by allowing students and their parents to choose schools and
authorizing charter schools.
The state agency
provided Delaforum and other media which requested it revised data
from 2001 to permit accurate year-to-year comparisons. The
revision incorporated the performance of special-education
students, whose results had been tabulated but excluded from
information made public last year.
Data released by the
state to the general public covers the district and school
levels. School administrations have received rults by individual
class and teachers and parents have been given information
concerning their individual students.
